Drinks producers to fund councils’ litter clean-up through new deposit return scheme

Documents from the scheme’s website say that drinks producers could expect a hike in their fees as soon as 2025

Irish drinks producers will soon fund the clean up of discarded bottles and cans through the country’s new deposit return scheme (DRS).

The scheme, which is funded partially by fees imposed on beverage producers, was launched earlier this month in a bid to increase recycling rates and reduce waste. It is operated by Re-turn, a new company established to oversee the initiative.

Producers currently pay to part-fund the scheme but will soon contribute towards the cost of litter clean-up across the country through the DRS too, according to documents published by Re-turn.
