When Fianna Fáil negotiators went into government talks with Fine Gael and the Green Party in 2020, they laid down an early marker. They made it clear they wanted to take on the troublesome housing brief.

The party, which was out of power for nearly a decade, assumed the portfolio from Fine Gael and also inherited its suite of policies that were having an adverse effect on the property market.
