The owner of Cork City FC has said it is “very frustrating” that controversy over payments to the FAI’s chief executive has distracted politicians from debating the funding of Irish football.

Dermot Usher, the former chief executive of bathroom product provider Sonas, also said he would like to see the League of Ireland “carved out” from football’s governing body and allowed greater input into financial issues that relate to domestic Irish football.

Usher, who took over the Leesiders in December 2022, told the Business Post that it was important that the FAI gets its “house in order” before applying for funding for the government.
