The delivery of state of the nation addresses by taoisigh used to be rare occasions, with the result that they became etched in the public consciousness.

In 1969, Jack Lynch told the Irish people that the state could “no longer stand by” in response to the outbreak of the Troubles in the North. In 1980, Charles Haughey warned us that we were living “way beyond our means”.
