Councillors are lobbying for a 40 per cent pay rise from the next government due to what they say is a substantial increase in workload, it has emerged

Currently, councillors get a taxable basic payment of €16,565 per year but they are seeking to increase this to €23,188. They also want increased travel and mobile phone expenses and the right to a pension for the first time.
