Not only does Abruzzo boast wonderful ancient villages and proximity to Rome, Naples and Pompeii, but it’s home to a hidden gem of skiing, Roccaraso, perfect for beginners and intimate enough for romantics.

During a visit to Abruzzo in central Italy, I have many choices. I could drive for two hours to Rome to take in the sights or hop on a shuttle to Naples and onwards to Pompeii for a cultural visit.

Instead, I’m exploring a hidden gem in the Appenines – the ski area of Roccaraso, also known as Alto Sangro.
