Irish companies listed on the Dublin and London stock exchanges spent billions buying their own shares in 2023, doubling the amount of shares bought in 2022.

While there has been a global rise in buybacks over the last number of years as share prices suffered, the surge in Irish share buybacks this year is part of a longer-term trend where companies are using the tool as a strategic way to return cash to investors.
