Audi’s ambitious prodigy started as a convention-challenging sports car, but it’s now roughing up some bona fide supercar rivals, writes Matt Robinson

When the Audi R8 arrived in 2007, it shook up the establishment. Here was a sports car from a manufacturer that had never attempted such a thing before, trying to wrest the crown from the most formidable of foes – the Porsche 911. But it wasn’t simply that Audi was gunning for the 911 with a powerful four-wheel-drive machine; it was the way the company went about it that truly startled onlookers.
