Back when I was an eager undergraduate in St Patrick’s College, Old English was a tricky hurdle to negotiate. Armed only with the large brick that was the Norton Anthology of English Literature, I gamely tackled Beowulf, but this was a one-sided battle and I didn’t get much out of it. Had I been equipped with The Translations of Seamus Heaney, I’d have fared better.
