Sara Keating: Lavery exhibition showcases the artist’s ability to vividly capture a moment in time

The National Gallery’s exhibition collects paintings from Lavery’s well-travelled life as well as those depicting his adoration of his family – and particularly his wife, Hazel

​In mid-October, in the modernist inner courtyard of the National Gallery of Ireland, a group of jazz musicians assembled to pay tribute to the artist from which the ensemble take their name. With saxophones and trumpets, the octet Lavery performed their debut single, The Mist, a sexy soul number heavy on keyboard and 1980s soul grooves.
