I’ve always loved the Jewish toast, “Next year in Jerusalem,” filled with the poetic longing of the exile. When the plane lands in Tel Aviv, I feel an urge to kiss the ground because I have finally made it to the promised land (I didn’t – I couldn’t find a place to do this without making a spectacle of myself).
