Eithne Shortall: Funny how once-loathed school uniforms are a relief now that I’m the parent

Uniforms create a more level playing field. They’re not going to wipe out inequality, but they can remove the overt pressures of designer labels and on-trend items. And yes, for parents, they are a time-saving godsend

When we were applying for primary schools for our son late last year, there were many factors to contemplate. All the schools were good, but there were still choices to be made. Chief among our considerations was proximity to our house and that the school be co-ed; we live in a city so shouldn’t need to be using the car, nor did I want to be doing separate drop-offs for my son and daughter.
