Book review: Paul Auster teases out tender pain of a beloved haunting

not his best work, but nonetheless manages to be lyrical and gently inspiring

Baumgartner, the titular character of Paul Auster’s first novel since 2017’s 4 3 2 1, is haunted, almost literally, by the memory of his late wife, Anna.
