Despite expressing sympathy for Mairia Cahill, politicians have stood over huge cuts to victim support services, writes Elaine Byrne.

When the Taoiseach embraced Mairia Cahill on the steps of Government Buildings, you could tell he meant it. The alleged rape victim used the word “compassionate” to describe her 90-minute meeting with Enda Kenny on Wednesday. Nor has Micheál Martin been found wanting. The Fianna Fáil leader has offered Cahill unwavering private support over a prolonged period.
