With World Cup qualification now out of the question, the FAI's failure to sell season tickets for the Aviva has left it in a precarious financial state, writes Barry J Whyte.

The five-year reign of Giovanni Trapattoni as Republic of Ireland manager came to an inglorious end last week, with the 1-0 defeat by Austria in Vienna ending all hopes of qualification for next year's World Cup in Brazil.

Trapattoni was undone by too many poor results on the pitch. However, many of those involved within both the association and Irish sport are more concerned with the financial position of Irish football.
