Israeli offensive will alienate the West
Israel’s objectives have largely been achieved in Gaza, but its violent actions can’t go on
Despite the rhetoric and hand wringing over the incursion into Gaza, the question still stands: what is Israel trying to achieve?
From a security standpoint, it revolves around two salient objectives - demolishing or degrading Hamas’s ability to function before a possibly more sympathetic US administration is in place at the end of this month, and directly impeding Hamas’s development of a tunnel network allowing unimpeded access to rockets and munitions from Egypt.
