GAA deal aims to spread the brand

Sponsors are likely to welcome the new rights move, writes Barry J Whyte.

The GAA generated a massive public and political debate last week when it granted exclusive rights to some of its summer games to Rupert Murdoch's Sky Sports.

Joe Brolly, the former Derry footballer and current RTE match analyst, was among the more tempered, saying: ''It's so very disappointing. It makes commercial sense and practical sense but it is damaging to the GAA's [volunteer and amateur] ethos.
