Across the length and breadth of Ireland, 80 town councils are to be abolished from June 1 onwards, writes Michael Brennan.
Recently, the mayor of Kilkenny in Minnesota was presented with a book that contained details of the first meeting of Kilkenny Council here in Ireland, more than 800 years ago.
Kilkenny (Ireland) deputy mayor Joe Reidy said that viewing the original manuscript of the council meeting in 1231 had a deep effect on the Minnesota town's mayor Kevin Taaffe Junior, whose ancestors are from the Irish city.
