Speculation within Leinster House that a general election was imminent steadily increased over the last month until it reached near fever pitch early last week. Fine Gael TDs and ministers were briefing journalists, who in turn were briefing other TDs and ministers, creating, as one adviser pointed out, an echo chamber that amplified the sense that a trip to the Aras was only the smart decision for Leo Varadkar.
