ESRI warns against further health overspend

The government has been warned to keep a tighter rein on health spending for the remainder of the year or risk inflicting further damage on the public finances.

The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) said that repeated overruns in the annual health budget had a “clearly negative impact” on the public finances but the think tank added that the issue had been partly masked by surges in corporation tax over recent years.
