Making a real difference to the carbon footprint of retailers

DIGI’s labelling solutions reduce carbon footprint, printing costs and landfill waste, illustrating how the more sustainable choice isn’t necessarily more costly and rather than meaning any compromise, actually offers greater benefits.

Alan Brown, managing director, DIGI Systems

At DIGI Group Ireland, sustainability is something we're proud of and are focused on continuing to improve. We’re bringing innovative solutions to our customers to help them choose more sustainable options. We’re proving that green solutions can be more cost-efficient and effective.

Our cutting-edge Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) are making a real difference to the carbon footprint of retailers across Ireland. The benefits for retailers go beyond a lower carbon footprint, from operational efficiency to customer experience and employee satisfaction. These labels replace paper price tags and connect directly to a retailer’s pricing software.

The result? Real-time, accurate pricing updates that enhance operational efficiency and flexibility. ESLs eliminate the need for weekly paper and ink tag printing, saving up to 40 labour hours per week for a store with approximately 2,000 tags. Businesses with multiple stores are seeing reduced travel time and expense as the ESLs can be managed remotely.

Beyond ESLs, our commitment to sustainability extends to Linerless Labels. These labels reduce waste by eliminating backing paper. Label backing film is not easily recycled. It’s a dangerous slip hazard in businesses and ends up in landfill, which is a cost to the environment and the business. The backing film is simply not necessary anymore, thanks to advances in the production of the paper and adhesive so that the Linerless label is actually much easier and faster to use.

Linerless is reported to have a 30-40% lower carbon footprint than Liner, but it comes with many more business benefits too, such as improved label design and reduced admin time. In just the first year since switching to DIGI Linerless Labels, Scally’s SuperValu Clonakilty reduced their landfill waste by approx. 2.5 tonnes (80,000 linear metres of label backing film), while also saving €30,000 on their label spend and waste disposal costs.

Irish retailers are leading the way and making greener choices

Irish retailers are ahead of the curve, and DIGI Group is at the forefront. We’ve already installed 3.2 million ESLs in Irish stores, and that number continues to grow each day. Our solutions empower retailers to thrive in a competitive market while championing sustainability.

Musgrave Group has approved our ESLs under their Sustainability grant for SuperValu and Centra stores. We’re proud to be part of their journey toward a greener future.
