GlobalLogic, a Hitachi Group Company and digital engineering leader, and life sciences technology company Head Diagnostics have won Best Application of AI in Healthcare at AI Ireland’s annual AI Awards 2023.

The organisations were recognised for the HDx Neuro AI Platform, which aims to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to address the difficulties in early diagnosis and support remote patient management of Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions.

Parkinson’s disease affects more than 10 million people worldwide, and 12,000-15,000 people in Ireland. There is currently no cure, but there are treatments available to relieve many of the debilitating symptoms.

A fundamental problem with Parkinson’s disease is difficulty in early diagnosis, as well as the lack of specific biomarkers to manage and monitor the condition where a patient’s symptoms can change and fluctuate daily. Thus, clinical decisions are largely based on more subjective clinical observations which cannot be done on a continuous basis.

Opening up new opportunities

To tackle this challenge, Head Diagnostics have partnered with GlobalLogic to develop the HDx Neuro AI Platform. The platform will leverage AI and ML capabilities to continually collect patient data on health status, medication adherence, symptoms severity, physiological measures and more. The HDx Neuro platform will also offer a neuro cloud as well as phone apps, which will be accessible by both clinicians and patients.

The solution will aim to provide multiple standalone digital medical devices that measure neuro conditions continually in a home or hospital setting. These include measurement tools such as a Parkinson’s Watch for continuous monitoring and other mobile and wearable technologies to assess motor symptoms, measure brainstem function as well as cognition assessment.

The platform aims to deliver neuro care in a new way while retaining the necessary access to expert clinicians. Using new state of the art neuro technologies, the solution will deliver rich, quantifiable clinical data to empower clinicians and patients. This opens new opportunities to provide better access to care with objective results, potential earlier discovery of diseases and real-time disease management.

What’s more, it provides patients with greater visibility and can connect them to carers when needed. The aim is to help patients achieve a greater quality of life, prioritise waiting lists and reduce the cost of care.
