Billy Kelleher: Cut off funds to EU states that violate its basic values

The only way to effectively sanction Poland and Hungary is to hit them where it hurts, by withdrawing funding

In late June, just before what should have been Dublin Pride weekend, Barry Andrews and I organised an online discussion on violations of LGBTI rights in Hungary and Poland. A question that was repeatedly asked was why the EU does not readily sanction or punish these countries when they are clearly violating basic EU values.
