The National Transport Authority has said the introduction of a German-style €9 monthly public transport ticket in Ireland would cost up to €411 million.

The German government introduced the heavily discounted public transport ticket for three months last summer to reduce climate emissions.

It reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 1.8 million tonnes but the German government replaced it with a €49 monthly public transport ticket due to the high cost.
