The government is moving to break the historic logjam over weekend and evening working for doctors, medics and other hospital staff, ahead of a major showdown with unions this summer.

Stephen Donnelly and his top officials are looking to end a system that is effectively running Monday to Friday, which is seen as a primary cause of overcrowding, high trolley numbers and waiting lists.
