Political neglect of RTÉ by governments just as much to blame as Montrose greed

It’s been a week from hell for RTÉ, which is still reeling from the shock news of secret, under-the-counter payments to its top-paid star, Ryan Tubridy.

It’s a scandal that goes beyond the reputational to the existential. Patrick O’Donovan, a junior minister in the Department of Public Expenditure, last week said that the idea of licence fee reform was “dead in the water”.
