‘It is critically important that our banks are profitable’: Lenders bat back at irate politicians

Bank executives argued that soaring profits are ‘inevitable’ in light of interest rate hikes - and that they should not be blamed for record revenues

It was always going to be a difficult argument to make – particularly in front of a roomful of politicians with frustrated constituents in their ears and their inboxes.

But at the Oireachtas finance committee on Wednesday, Ireland’s banks made a manful attempt to explain why - actually - their record profits shouldn’t be used as a stick to beat them with.
