CareChoice billed for millions of euro by own shareholders

Nursing home operator’s accounts show interest bill rose from €2 million in 2019 to €11.8 million in 2021

Relatives of patients in a CareChoice nursing home in Beaumont, Co Cork, picketed the constituency office of Tánaiste Micheál Martin last week to put pressure on the state to increase its annual payments

The nursing home group which threatened to pull one of its homes out of the Fair Deal scheme is being billed for millions of euro by its own shareholders, it has emerged.

CareChoice, which owns 14 nursing homes around the country, describes itself as “Ireland’s leading nursing home operator”.

It has complained that the state’s Fair Deal rates for nursing home patients do not cover the “significant increase in cost of care” in recent years.
