Michael O’Farrell’s book is at its most compelling when trying to probe the shamed solicitor’s character and motives

Michael Lynn has always loved the sound of his own voice. Whenever he sang at weddings and parties as a boy, friends recall, the microphone would have to be wrestled from his icy grip.
