When Joanna Geraghty, the next chief of JetBlue Airways, gave a commencement address in 2020, she spoke of having “the gift of grit.”

That gift is already being put to the test. Geraghty expected to inherit a company buying Spirit Airlines and on its way to becoming a much larger carrier. Hopes of completing that tie-up were severely dimmed last week when a judge blocked the deal.
