John Manzoni, the next chair of drinks maker Diageo, is a unique appointment.

The current chair, Javier Ferrán, had an almost idyllic CV for the position, full of consumer facing brands with multiple different sub-businesses.

Manzoni, on the other hand, is no stranger to challenge and conflict having been an executive at BP during the time of a horrific refinery incident and a UK civil servant during the preparations for Brexit.

With Diageo’s reputation on the line and a relatively new chief executive in Debra Crew at the helm, will Manzoni be the steward the drinks giant needs?
