Proposals that will see significant parts of Dublin city centre closed off to private cars were presented to councillors in recent days, with the speed of the proposed changes taking many by surprise.

Eamon Ryan, the minister for transport, said he expected large parts of the “road space reallocation” project to be enacted by this August.
