Government spin about ‘record’ spending on the health service doesn’t paint the full picture. Recent service plans didn’t solve the most pressing long-term problems and neither will the 2023 version

The Minister for Health and his spokespeople have taken to answering questions about unmet need and underperformance by directing our attention to either “record” spending or “record” activity.

This approach and the language used is worryingly reminiscent of the spending splurges of the phoney Celtic Tiger era when social partnership deals and one-time revenues were used to restock the public sector ATMs.
