There’s a fine tradition in this country of capital projects running vastly over budget, way past the deadline they were required to be delivered and often failing to be fit for future requirements.

The Celtic Tiger era was not without its white elephants. The abandoned “Bertie Bowl” stadium cost about €40 million. The proposed prison at Thornton Hall cost even more at €52 million, with not a single brick being laid.
