Shane Coleman: Politically possible becomes impossible when politicians are consumed with optics

Ideas like expelling the Israeli ambassador may be popular, but Ireland needs continued diplomatic relations with Israel in order to save lives

Which is more important in Ireland today, the politics of soundbite and virtue signalling, or realpolitik that actually brings results?

The question is timely, given the events of recent days. Opposition politicians spent much of the week grandstanding in the Dáil – putting down motions calling for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the referral of Israel to the International Criminal Court.
