Removal of rent caps secret to unlocking delivery of 50,000 homes

Just when this current government feels like it is beginning to make progress on housing, worrying news emerges to show it is nowhere near enough.

Senior officials in the Department of Finance are now briefing Finance Minister Michael McGrath that the government’s housing targets of 33,000 homes are “significantly below” the actual requirement of 50,000 homes per year to meet demand

Last year, just under 32,700 homes were built in this country, which is the highest output of new housing in well over a decade. Since this government first took office in 2020, state investment in housing has increased significantly with €4 billion a year committed to ramping up the supply of new homes.
