The reach of democracy in India is extraordinarily wide. Citizens of the world’s most populous country began voting on Thursday in a general election, and it will be quite the spectacle. Some 969 million Indians are eligible to vote, and polling takes place on specified days up to 1 June. If everything goes to plan – as it invariably does – the result will be announced on 4 June.
