Matt Cooper: RTÉ needs to dig deeper to pull itself out of its ‘new low’

If its track record is anything to go by, the state broadcaster is strong on bluster but incapable of making meaningful cuts to its cost base

It probably isn’t surprising, given that the collection of the broadcasting licence fee is so far behind requirements, but RTÉ now has a quantified public trust crisis.

This is bad news at a time when the organisation is looking for a large transfer of public funds based on its perceived importance. While the government may be sympathetic to supporting RTÉ as a public interest broadcaster, its willingness to do so might be tempered by a ...
