Comparisons are often made between Ireland today and in 2008. Back then the booming economy came to a shuddering halt when the property market collapsed and the main source of tax revenues dried up.

The government was forced into an EU/IMF bailout in 2010 because the yawning chasm between annual spending and income had reached unsustainable levels.
