John Walsh: Housing crisis, migrant influx and scandal at RTÉ could erode our political centre

Ireland remains a stable country, but it is not immune to destabilising factors facing other countries – and a consequent drift to the far right

Faisal Islam, now BBC economics editor, was a reporter with Channel 4 News during the last financial crisis. He did a series of reports of the most stricken EU states – Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain, or the PIIGS as they became known. His dispatch from Ireland coincided with the EU-IMF bailout in November 2010. He contrasted the relatively peaceful scenes in Dublin with the violent demonstrations in other bailout countries.
