Ian Guider: The time to reform unemployment benefits is now

Ireland is one of the few European countries that does not provide unemployment benefits linked to salary. With our current record-low unemployment and full coffers, now is the time to change this

Last week, unions representing hundreds of workers at Tara Mines met with management to present their proposals to avert a disastrous halt to mining operations. Whether the mine’s parent company, Boliden, were going through the motions of studying the plan or taking the cost-saving options seriously, we’ll know in the coming couple of weeks.
