Judging by the media blitz by Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, the junior minister in the Department of Finance, a new era of competition in banking is about to be ushered in. An overhaul of the legislation governing credit unions will allow them to double their capacity for mortgage lending, assisting their behind-the-scenes plans to launch a new nationwide home loans product.
