Editorial: Tough budget calls for McGrath as Varadkar steals the limelight again

The Taoiseach’s comments about relief for mortgage holders may be an attempt to steal a march on his coalition partners while the finance minister may look to the hated USC to deliver relief to workers and homeowners

The decision by Italian premier Giorgia Meloni to slap a 40 per cent windfall tax on her country’s banks has predictably led to questions being asked in other capitals around the world as to what can be done.

In Ireland, comments made last week by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to the effect that there will be consideration in October’s budget for those people feeling the pinch of successive mortgage interest rate increases have been seized upon.
