Editorial: RTÉ rescue package postpones problem and ignores elephant in the room

With traditional broadcasting in rapid decline, the state broadcaster requires radical transformation to enable it to pay its way

The rescue package at RTÉ will mainly pay for the “golden handshake” redundancies on a bloated organisation.

Once again, embattled national broadcaster RTÉ finds itself in the headlines. After a summer of turmoil, new director general Kevin Bakhurst and his fellow directors have unveiled their plan to “rightsize” the enterprise.

While their efforts are to be welcomed, the simple truth is that they have missed a unique opportunity to future-proof Montrose.
