Editorial: Move to drive traffic out of Dublin must not be tone deaf to the needs of firms

The council’s proposal is welcome but it is important to move carefully and to bring not local people and local businesses onside

Cars are being banned even though public transport in the city is less than ideal

Even a modest attempt to limit the number of cars using a particular street can raise hackles in unlikely places. A plan by Fingal County Council to partly pedestrianise a street in the lovely north Dublin town of Malahide recently ignited a storm of protest from residents and business owners, even though it would have meant less traffic and more car-free space for everybody.
