Editorial: Failure to pass defamation reform bill would further erode democracy

Jury trials in defamation court actions are in no-one’s interest and should be abolished as soon as possible

Last month, the Oireachtas justice committee published a report on its pre-legislative scrutiny of the government’s modernised defamation bill. In its report, the committee went against the government in recommending that juries be retained in defamation cases. It said abolishing them would be a “knee jerk reaction”.
