Editorial: Banks need to prove that they can put customers first

As Ulster Bank and KBC retreat from the Irish market, the remaining banks must avoid the temptation to profit from the reduced competition and make the switch for customers as easy as possible

The departure of KBC bank from the Irish market has left many customers with the difficult work of having to switch accounts

The imminent departure from Ireland of two major lenders in Ulster Bank and KBC represents a seismic redrawing of the Irish banking landscape. The hundreds of thousands of customers left in the lurch by the two banks find themselves at the polar opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to the ramifications of that upheaval, and so too do the remaining lenders.
