Dublin’s €800 million in funding for cross-border projects is deeply significant

The predictably reductionist row over Casement Park should not be allowed to distract from an historic commitment from the Irish government

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that the €600 million to build the long talked-about A5 northwest transport corridor would “bring connectivity between north and south in line with the rest of the island”

There has been plenty of talk about history being made in Northern Ireland in recent weeks with the return of the Stormont Assembly and the election of a Sinn Féin First Minister in Michelle O’Neill.

Arguably as important, from the perspective of symbolism, was the Dublin government’s announcement of €800 million in funding for cross-border initiatives, as part of its Shared Island project.
