Hard conversations must be had now about the realities of what screening programmes can do, and how we should discuss them in the media

Five years ago this month, CervicalCheck exploded into the public consciousness. In the long interim since 2018, there have been court cases, independent inquiries and a recently passed patient safety bill. But even now, an enduring legacy of confusion still lingers over what went wrong. Matters of life and death are always emotive affairs, and widespread perceptions that medical ineptitude killed women fuels an understandable enmity.
