Biden’s time in Ireland marked by dignity, warmth and decency

The US president visited all the right places, said all the right things and cheesed off exactly the right people

Joe Biden’s trip to Ireland North and South last week was not so much an official visit as a pilgrimage. During his time here the US president signed no treaties and made no globally resonant pronouncements. Instead, he seemed to be on a personal journey to satisfy an old desire, nurtured in his Irish-American Catholic family, to remember his ancestors and to mark what his family has achieved in the generations since.
